چکیده

The motion of a charged particle in a magnetic dipole has first been studied by Wrmer. The different applications of Stiirmer’s theory to anrorae, cosmic rays and Van Allen radiation belt particles are recalled in an historical perspective. In this paper, we expand the Mrmer theory in order to take into account the effects produced by an additional uniform and stationary interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) whose orientation is parallel or antiparallel to the magnetic moment of the dipole. A new expression is derived for the St6rmer _ potential taking into account the additional IMF component. It is shown how Stbrmer’s allowed and forbidden zones are influenced by the implementation of a northward or a southward IMF, and how a southward turning of the IMF orientation makes it easier for Solar Energetic Particle and Galactic Cosmic Rays to enter into the inner part of the geomagnetic field along interconnected magnetic field lines. *

On the origins and timescales of geoeffective IMF

Southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) in the geocentric solar magnetospheric (GSM) reference frame is the key element that controls the level of space weather disturbance in Earth’s magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere. We discuss the relation of this geoeffective IMF component to the IMF in the geocentric solar ecliptic (GSE) frame, and using the almost continuous interplanetary...

Semiannual Variation of Geomagnetic Activity

The semiannual variation in geomagnetic activity is well established in geomagnetic data Its explanation has remained elusive, however. We propose, simply, that it is caused by a semiannual variation in the effective southward component of the interplanetary field. The southward field arises because the interplanetary field is ordered in the solar equatorial coordinate system, whereas the inter...

Dependence of the depth of the Earth ’ s plasma depletion layer on the interplanetary magnetic field direction and the Alfvénic Mach number

The Earth’s magnetosheath, the transition region between the Earth’s magnetopause and the bow shock, is a space laboratory for the investigation of magnetoactive plasmas. Analogeous studies are also the aim of the LAPLAS experiment planned for the FAIR facility at GSI [1]. One of the recent problems of the magnetosheath physics is the dependence of its plasma depletion layer on the direction of...

Multiscale modeling of magnetospheric reconnection

[1] In our efforts to bridge the gap between small-scale kinetic modeling and global simulations, we introduced an approach that allows to quantify the interaction between large-scale global magnetospheric dynamics and microphysical processes in diffusion regions near reconnection sites. We use the global MHD code BATS-R-US and replace an ad hoc anomalous resistivity often employed by global MH...

Interaction of Fast Steady Flow With Slow Transient Flow: A New Cause of Shock Pair and Interplanetary B z Event

The occurrence of the nonspiral magnetic field, high helium density, "cold magnetic enhancement" and counterstreaming suprathermal electron flux in the slow flow around a forward shock indicates that the slow flow is the interplanetary counterpart of the coronal mass ejection (ICME). The characteristics of the field and plasma in the fast flow around the reverse shock are typical for a fast ste...
